About Denise:
Praised for her “golden and angelic tone,” Denise Bird is a Puerto Rican singer, writer, and educator. She was a doctoral candidate at the UMN- Twin Cities, where she apprenticed with the illustrious mezzo-soprano, Glenda Maurice. Other significant mentors and contributors to her artistry have included Daniel Johnson-Wilmot (Viterbo University), George Smith (MN Opera), Eva de la Ó (Música de Cámara, NYC), and Jean Saladino (Viterbo University). Denise worked as an office assistant for Grammy Award-winning composer, Libby Larsen, and has contributed as an advocate by commissioning new works by Puerto Rican composers and those from other underrepresented demographics. She currently serves on the advisory council for the Institute for Composer Diversity. She has performed in roles such as Blonde, Susanna, Nanetta, and has presented arias as characters to include Tosca, Gilda, Lauretta, Carmen, and Cio Cio San. Denise currently teaches at Reed Music Studios in Onalaska, WI, and cantors regularly at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse, WI, where she lives with her husband and two children.
